“Signals another promising discovery in a film industry that is definitely coming into its own golden age”
-The Hollywood Reporter
“In his FIPRESCI-awarded debut feature La Zona, the Mexican director of Uruguayan origin Rodrigo Plá unfolds the image of a rich Mexican minority surrounded by a poor majority. The film makes a subtle use of cinematographic codes (thriller, anticipation), bringing to light a sadly realistic dichotomy: The gap in Mexican society, and the frailty of human conviction… The development soon plunges us into a classical manhunt thriller.”
-Fipresci
“An impressive feature debut that sweeps the viewer into the horrors of vigilante injustice, Pla finds the perfect balance between the eerie perfection of La Zona and the rottenness at its core, refusing to let anyone off either by action or inaction”
-Variety
“ A sharp social satire, and one disturbingly close to the reality of segregated communities in many parts of South America. Pla has a worthwhile point to make and he argues it well with the help of a supremely talented cast”
-Twitch
-Days of Cinema
“La Zona is one of those rare films which grips you from the start and doesn't let go till the end credits roll up. It is also a rare example of a thriller and social drama which delivers on both fronts It's one of the most accomplished feature debuts that I have ever seen and you can be certain that Rodrigo Pla's name is going to be much better known in the coming years..”
